Item Ace Scored Effect on Substance Use and Academic Success(Northern Kentucky University) Moore, RebeccaAdverse Childhood Experiences are traumatic experiences such as physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and many more that happen before the age of eighteen. Ace’s can affect an Individuals substance use as they grow through adolescents and enter into college age. Little research has been done to show the effects of ace scores, substance use, and academic success. This research can help us learn how student success is affected by ace scores and substance use and provide resources to support students in treatment and servicesItem Anxiety and Depression on Campus(Northern Kentucky University) Ryan, SamanthaIt is not uncommon for college students to struggle with mental health—specifically with anxiety and/or depression. Often, a college student’s anxiety and/or depression may have a negative impact on their academic performance—for example, a student’s GPA and attendance rates. This study examines the prevalence of these ramifications. Data was collected from NKU students through an online survey using Qualtrics. Results were expected to show that a student’s anxiety and/or depression does, in fact, have a negative impact on their academic performance.Item Campus Climate: Perceptions and Impacts among LGBTQ+ College Students(Northern Kentucky University) Fitzpatrick, SamanthaPerceptions of campus climate significantly impact students’ academic achievement and level of satisfaction with their university. It is only within the last decade that research has begun to examine the effects of campus climate on sexual minority groups. A brief, self- administered survey will assess perceptions of campus climate among college students. The anticipated results will show that negative perceptions of campus climate have a negative impact on students’ academic success and mental health. Results will bridge the gap in knowledge, provide insight into how to better serve students’ needs, and inform policy and advocacy initiatives to promote inclusivity at NKU.Item Consequences of Intergenerational Poverty on Academic Attainment(Northern Kentucky University) Irwin, HannaPoverty is an overwhelmingly wide-spread problem that impacts multiple areas of functioning including social, behavioral, emotional, physiological, and neuropsychological functioning. Research shows that impacts of poverty on functioning during childhood are key risk factors for poverty to be continued into adulthood, resulting in poverty passing through generations. This study is designed to determine the impacts that intergenerational poverty has on academic achievement amongst NKU students. This survey will use non-probability and purposeful sampling to collect data from 290 NKU students. The research will assist social workers in better understanding and advocating for college students experiencing intergenerational poverty.Item Course-Based Undergraduate Research (CURE) Integration Increases Student Overall Success(Northern Kentucky University) Wallace, Bridget"Traditional learning in undergraduate STEM degrees is not always conducive to all learning styles, especially when it comes to performance in a lab environment. Course- based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) allow a broader range of students the opportunity to participate in scientific research, while also engaging these students in a new style of learning. Northern Kentucky University implemented CURE labs to embrace real- world techniques and give drive and meaning to the work that each student performs in the lab. Ultimately, CURE labs improve students’ success in STEM and in college, as well as make research more accessible to a broader scale."Item Drug and Alcohol Use Among NKU Students(Northern Kentucky University) Maddox, SophieIt is estimated that 20% of college students meet the criteria for a substance use disorder. This is concerning because substance abuse negatively impacts academic achievement. This study aims to determine what substances are used, existing knowledge about where to find treatment on campus, and the effects that use has on academic achievement among NKU students. An online survey was used to collect data from 100 NKU students. Findings might suggest that the stigma related to drug and alcohol use is a deterrence to seeking help. Possible need for expansion and normalization of resources on NKU’s campus is discussed.Item Effects of Social Media and Technology on College Students’ GPA(Northern Kentucky University) Smith, MeghannWith the increasing prevalence of technological use, students are finding it harder to turn off the devices. The question then becomes, what are the effects of the constant connectivity? This study assesses whether devices used for access to social media accounts during class time has any direct correlation on a student’s GPA. The data examines students currently enrolled at Northern Kentucky University and is collected based on information gathered from an online survey. Results are expected to show that , with increased usage of devices during class for personal use, GPA are lowered.Item The Effects of Substance Abuse and Barriers to Treatment for NKU Students(Northern Kentucky University) Hurst, Aleisha AutumnSubstance abuse negatively impacts academic progress and graduation retention of students nationwide. This study examines the effects on academics and the barriers for treatment for NKU students. Surveys were administered online to collect data from approximately 102 students. It is anticipated that students who currently abuse substances are more likely to struggle academically. Findings from this study could be used to create policy and programs that remove barriers and encourage students with substance abuse issues to seek and complete treatment while completing their education.Item Food Insecurity on NKU’s Campus(Northern Kentucky University) Francesconi, AmberResearch suggests that food insecurity is a substantial problem on college campuses. Moreover, food insecurity has been found to negatively impact academic performance. The current study seeks to examine the relationship between students’ food security level and their GPA, classroom behaviors, and psychological well-being. A brief self-administered survey will be used to assess for food security levels as well academic outcomes. The results of this IRB approved study are expected to demonstrate that academic outcomes are negatively impacted by food insecurity. The findings from this study can provide additional support for the expansion and creation of resources for students.Item Homelessness and Academic Success at NKU(Northern Kentucky University) Davis, MackenzieStudies show those who experience housing insecurity face more barriers to academic success than those with stable housing. This study is collecting data about the experience of Northern Kentucky University students and how experiencing housing insecurity affects academic performance. A brief IRB approved self-administered survey will be used to collect data about their experiences with housing insecurity and academic performance. The results from this study are expected to show that students who experience housing insecurity have poorer academic outcomes than students with stable housing. These findings will help show the need for homeless programming and assistance at Northern Kentucky University.Item The Impact of Binge Drinking on Student Wellness(Northern Kentucky University) Phillips, Brett"Binge drinking amongst college aged students negatively impacts student wellness and increases risk for social problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how binge drinking negatively impacts wellness. The irresponsible consumption of alcohol can impede academic success and damage relationships. This exploratory, cross- sectional study will utilize nonprobability, purposive sampling to collect data from an estimated 200 NKU students and other college- aged individuals. It is expected that the data will show a negative relationship between binge drinking and student wellness. This study will result in targeted policy initiatives and improved interventions for college students who engage in binge drinking."Item Impact of Mentoring Perceptions on Grade Point Average(Northern Kentucky University) Keller, NoelleMentoring relationships can have a positive impact on academic performance in college students. Students engaged in mentoring relationships have shown improved grades and retention rates, but there are few studies focused on the mentee’s mentoring perceptions. This study aims to explore mentoring perceptions and academic performance through grade point average (GPA). Anticipated findings will endorse that students who have more positive mentoring perceptions have higher GPAs. An online survey was used to collect data from 100 NKU students. Results will inform the NKU community on the impact of mentoring perceptions on GPA.Item The Impact of Workplace Relationships on Mental Health and Academic Success in College Students(Northern Kentucky University) Klette, KatieRising cost of living and tuition rates create an increased demand for college students to work while attending school. College students are spending more and more time with coworkers and management as a result. However, there has been little research conducted on the impact of workplace relationships on colleges students. The purpose of this study is to examine how work relationships affect academic success and mental health in the context of working college students. The anticipated outcome is that students with poor workplace relationships will have their mental health and academic success impacted negatively.Item Impacts of Intimate Partner Violence on Academic Success(Northern Kentucky University) Irvin, Tara"Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global social problem that impacts several areas of functioning including mental health, finances, education, and human development. This cross sectional, self – administered survey will examine how IPV impacts the lives of individuals. The results will evidence the high prevalence of IPV, and illustrate the need for social work practice interventions designed to positively counteract associated negative economic and educational impacts. In addition, the results will support further research to identify specific challenges and possible policy and advocacy avenues to alleviate the impact of IPV."Item The Implications of Poverty on Educational Achievements of College Students(Northern Kentucky University) Kennedy, Jamin"Past research indicates that individuals who have experienced poverty tend to experience negative outcomes in issues related to education, physical and mental health, and incarceration. This study examines the relationship between poverty and educational achievements of college students. Data was collected utilizing Qualtrics, an online survey, administered to college students on social media. Educational achievements are expected to be lower for those who experienced poverty. Findings may assist in efforts including policy change, further research, and resources directed towards social justice initiatives for college students who have experienced poverty."Item Long-Term Effects of Students With Divorced Families(Northern Kentucky University) Dunlap, PhilishaPrevious studies to the long-term effects stemming from their parents’ divorce, the impact of the situation can be effective not just emotionally and academically, but also psychologically. The purpose of this study is to examine the long-term effects among college students and their divorced parents. The study will gather data from the college students, and the statistical analysis will be utilized by SPSS software program. The further study will be suggested to find the appropriate services for college students on campus to support their academic success.Item Mental Illness Among College Students(Northern Kentucky University) Johnston, Sarah"Research shows that mental illness has been increasing among college students. Universities have responded to this social problem by expanding student resources, including counseling and disability services. This study seeks to examine if accessing disability services has a positive effect on the academic performance of students who have a diagnosed mental illness. The results of the study, which used an electronic survey, are expected to show that students who have a mental illness and utilize disability services perform at higher academic levels. These findings may prompt universities to encourage students to utilize disability services in order to promote academic success."Item Overcoming the Achievement Gap in America(Northern Kentucky University) Lattire, AnnaThere are enormous economic benefits to closing achievement gaps in America, and significant economic costs if we fail. Advancing an opportunity agenda that expands equity is critical but, closing achievement gaps and raising achievement outcomes will require more than just changes within school systems. Communities must also address the social and economic factors outside the classroom that impact students' success, including the very complex issues of economic inequality and socioeconomic segregation in housing which, intersect with race and ethnicity to impact educational opportunity and outcomes.Item The Relationship between Social Anxiety and Academic Performance Among NKU Students(Northern Kentucky University) Hughes, TaylorSocial anxiety may create significant academic challenges for students. This is alarming because approximately 12.1% of undergraduate students in the United States meet criteria for a social anxiety disorder. This study utilizes a self-report survey and examines social anxiety levels in NKU undergraduate students and the impact this can have on academic performance. This study expects to find that students with high social anxiety will perform lower academically than peers with low social anxiety. The results will provide awareness of mental health issues and additional resources to promote academic success.Item Rise in College Tuition(Northern Kentucky University) Denham, MariahWith the rising cost of tuition many people question if a college education is really worth it. Research shows that middle-class students are less likely to receive non-loan aid and more likely to take out higher loan amounts which can link to lower GPA’s. A brief self-administered survey will be used to assess for the academic well-being of NKU middle class students. The results from this IRB approved study are expected to show the negative impact higher loan amounts have on NKU’s middle-class students. The results will bridge the gap in research and give an accurate representation of the middle-class.
