Item Ishmael Na My Name: Moby-Dick Poetry in Pidgin English(Northern Kentucky University, 2019) Uwolloh, Onyinye MiriamItem The Degradation of the Small Farm and its Transnational Effects(Northern Kentucky University, 2019-04) Bryant, KathleenItem Revision of Standard Operating Procedures for a Hospital Based Infectious Disease Response Team(Northern Kentucky University, 2019-04) Meier, Monica E.Item Challenges in Analyzing K-3 Mathematics Data(Northern Kentucky University, 2019-12-03) Akinrele, KolawoleThe Kentucky Center for Mathematics (KCM) is a state supported entity charged with improving effective mathematics teaching and learning, involving early childhood through adulthood. The KCM primarily does this by facilitating professional learning experiences (PLE) for early grade teachers across the state of Kentucky. Early grade students are administered various math tests throughout the year (fall, winter, and spring). Some of the tests are Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Test, Star Math Assessment, iReady Math Test, etc. Additionally, the KCM administers surveys to early grade teachers who participated in the PLE’s. The Burkardt Consulting Center (BCC) partners with KCM, applying statistical techniques to assess the effectiveness of KCM PLE’s. PLE effectiveness can be measured by looking at teacher satisfaction through surveys and student improvement through test scores. I am a senior majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. I aspire to be an actuary.Item Ensuring the Integrity of an HSV-Vectored Vaccine System(Northern Kentucky University, 2020) Adams, Samuel; ;Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-vectored vaccines for hepatitis C virus (HCV) were developed utilizing a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) system for DNA manipulations. These BAC-derived vectors allow for the rapid introduction and expression of foreign DNA in the HSV backbone. The DNA sequence of several production lots of the vaccine is currently being determined to confirm the genetic stability of the vaccine. While the initial vaccine target was hepatitis C virus, genes from any infectious virus, such as novel coronaviruses, could be inserted into this vaccine vector to generate immunity to that agent.Item Immigrant Generations in Home Leaving: Do Parents and Peers Matter?(Northern Kentucky University, 2020) Methakitwarun, SiriruayHome leaving is a normative behavior for young adults in the US, likely shaped by peers and parents in adolescence. However, immigrant parents are less supportive of home leaving. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N= 4,882), this study investigated whether these social supports matters in home leaving across immigrant generations. Findings suggest that later generations are more likely to leave home. Little difference was detected between first- and second-generation when considering the social supports, thus the influence of peers and parents does not appear to explain generational differences in home leaving.Item Effects of Self-Discrepancy Salience and Purchase Type on Extended Self(Northern Kentucky University, 2020-04-29) Longmire, SierraItem Psychosocial Characteristics of College Students and JUUL(Northern Kentucky University, 2020-04-29) Beckman, SidneyItem Energy Reconstruction in the ISS-CREAM Calorimeter(Northern Kentucky University) Frame, EmilyThe ISS-CREAM instrument was launched to the International Space Station in 2017 to study the composition of cosmic rays, which are charged particles from outer space. The calorimeter (CAL) is a detector that measures the fraction of the particle’s energy that is deposited in the CAL. The particles’ energies are reconstructed using simulations that compare the energy deposited in the CAL to the original particle energy. This study explored different parameters of the reconstruction process. Specifically, we looked at the method of characterizing the mean deposited energy, the choice of function to fit the data, and sensitivity to energy threshold.Item How does substance abuse education affect Black Women's substance use in College(Northern Kentucky University) Lubans-Jones, Alexandra"This is a social problem that effects everyone either directly or indirectly. It is a cause that needs a lot of constant attention due to the overwhelming amount of adults and children affected by either alcohol or substance misuse. This is a disease that we can use prevention to educate in schools, churches, and community partners. Literature shows us that there is a delay in services and limited research for the non-white people who are diagnosed with substance use disorder. The lack and delay in healthcare, preventative, and educational resources, result in Black women to have a higher rate of medical issues, such as cirrhosis, respiratory complications."Item Women In Drug Rehab(Northern Kentucky University) Smith, Jessica"The need for drug rehab for women has grown over the years, however there remains limited drug rehab help for women and limited research addressing this need. Most research focuses on men and centers primarily focus on the male population. Because men and women react differently to chemical intervention, their rehab needs may differ. Circumstances that influence women’s drug use can also be quite different from issues that trigger drug abuse among men. With these factors in mind, and with the need to address the increase in women who need drug rehab, it is important to explore factors that influence drug abuse among women and prevent them from breaking the cycle. Further, it is essential to better understand the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual needs of the women who are caught in this vicious drug abuse cycle and provide services that focus on the unique needs of women to help them transition back into society."Item The Effects of Clicker Training on Stress in Communally Housed Shelter CatsVerdino, SavanaStress is a major concern regarding shelter cat populations, as it has many health and behavioral implications that could prolong their stay in a shelter environment. Many studies have looked at stress reduction methods in individually housed cats, but not those housed in communal rooms. This study focused on these communally housed cats and the effects that clicker training had on their stress levels. It was found that after six sessions, cats exhibited significantly lower overall stress scores. This suggests that clicker training could assist in improving the welfare and adoptability of communally housed shelter cats.Item COVID-19 and the impact on mental health(Northern Kentucky University) Martin, Sarah"The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on people's mental health. Specifically, literature demonstrates that COVID-19 has negatively impacted parents, first responders, law enforcement, and healthcare workers. Literature on the mental health ramifications of COVID-19 among the general public is largely missing. This exploratory, cross-sectional study will collect data from an estimated 200 individuals to examine the mental health implications of COVID-19 among the general public. The findings will show that COVID-19 has negative mental health implications. These results will allow me to educate others on the pandemic's impact on mental well being and how we can promote mental health."Item Substance Use Disorder and Treatment(Northern Kentucky University) Kandrack, Hannah"Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) can be a lifesaving tool for those who suffer from Substance Use Disorder, yet research suggests that there is considerable stigma associated with MAT. This cross-sectional study will use an electronic survey to examine people’s knowledge and support of MAT. The expected results will show that individuals have limited knowledge of MAT and that there is also limited support for the use of this treatment option. Social workers may use these findings to raise awareness about this effective treatment strategy."Item Minimum Wage; Effects on lifestyle based on regulations and laws(Northern Kentucky University) Stoll, KelseyMy focus for this presentation was to research the aspects and characteristics that play a role in deciding minimum wage rules and regulations, such as disability, age, breaks and laws passed by congress in order to have a set order for the world to follow.Item Acetone Centrifugation and Acid/Base Work Up for Palladium-catalyzed Heteroarylation of Ketones Reaction(Northern Kentucky University) Le, Thao Linh (Rosie); Nguyen, Binh"The research belongs to the CURE program which exposes students to research. 2.5 million women in the US are currently fighting against breast cancer. Fortunately, placental aromatase cytochrome exists an active site that is potential for interacting with drug inhibitors. Tropinone derivatives (I80-H40, I80- H44, and I80-HIH45) were synthesized using the microwave to yield H- bonding and interaction with the Heme group in aromatase. The reaction is catalyzed by Palladium catalysis to prevent (bishero)arylation. During the process, a new work up method by acetone and acid/base wash was found to yield a better purification of the product."Item Teenage Mothers: Attainment of Education(Northern Kentucky University) Johnson, Katie"Although teen pregnancy has decreased nationwide over the last several years, the US is still one of the highest in the developed countries in teenage pregnancies. The social and educational risk factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy are crucial in understanding what needs to be done in order to provide support and resources for teenage mothers. One of the biggest challenges teenage mothers face is graduating from high school. Most teenage mothers will drop out of high school because of the stigmatization associated with early pregnancy. Statistics show that only 10% of mothers between the ages of 13-17 graduate from high school. The socio-economic outcomes have been the focus on research of teenage parents, often finding a negative impact on employment. Education can mitigate these negative outcomes. This complex problem can be viewed through a psychological and educational lens and the policies and programs that can or should be available to help with teenage moms attaining an education are vital to the research I will be completing. The gap between teenage mothers’ aspirations and the support they receive suggest that more can be done on an educational platform and there is a missed opportunity to help these young women."Item Fight The System: The Art of Protest Music(Northern Kentucky University) Parr, Alysa"Popular culture is an aspect of life that we are exposed to daily whether it be a simple television program to the various world issues we face. Over many decades, there has been an overwhelming presence of these issues, allowing protest music to come to the forefront. The purpose of this study is to determine how these songs impact popular culture and social movements from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and modern-day. Furthermore, it explores what songs were inspired by each movement, their significance, and how they relate back to modern-day protest music."Item Childhood Obesity in Low Income Households(Northern Kentucky University) Harves, Adam"Research shows that low- income households are more likely to be obese due to less nutrient dense food options in their restaurants, food pantries, and grocery stores. Previous studies have concluded that low SES plays a significant role in the Nations childhood obesity problem. Nutritious foods have become more expensive and less accessible over the years. While nutrient dense foods are expensive, low-cost diets are providing “more energy”. The results suggest that people need to be aware of what they are donating to food pantries and grocery stores in low-income areas need to have healthier cheaper options. Childhood obesity in low-income households is important because everyone deserves to have access to healthy options"Item Impact of Mentoring Perceptions on Grade Point Average(Northern Kentucky University) Keller, NoelleMentoring relationships can have a positive impact on academic performance in college students. Students engaged in mentoring relationships have shown improved grades and retention rates, but there are few studies focused on the mentee’s mentoring perceptions. This study aims to explore mentoring perceptions and academic performance through grade point average (GPA). Anticipated findings will endorse that students who have more positive mentoring perceptions have higher GPAs. An online survey was used to collect data from 100 NKU students. Results will inform the NKU community on the impact of mentoring perceptions on GPA.
