Abstract
The main goal of the project is to develop 3D immersive geological models that can be easily implemented into online and classroom-based lessons. VR experiences would not only reduce travel costs but also would increase in-class participation of students. We selected Carter-Caves as our field area to test VR technologies. Recorded data were processed to create low-cost, high-quality virtual models. Preliminary results suggest that many factors influence the quality and extent of 3D environments. Here we discuss some of the major factors including sensor type, recording platform, field environments, videography, processing techniques and rock type.
