Research shows that there is a difference in childhood maltreatment among black and white children and the long-term effects of this trauma. The lack of cultural diversity in the mental health field causes there to be a lack of treatment options tailored to the needs of different ethnicities. This research paper examines the existing literature on the differences between black and white individuals’ experiences with trauma, and the ethnically-based treatment options suitable for black individuals who have suffered from childhood maltreatment. This literature review is expected to demonstrate that current treatment options don’t directly meet the needs of black individuals.
