Item Ezinulo Fureduri(Northern Kentucky University) Uwolloh, OnyinyeLittle is known about Frederick Douglass’ lineage beyond the names of his maternal grandparents. This short story takes some creative license by going off the idea that one of Douglass’ fore-mothers was born in the fictional village of Adazi (located in modern day South East Nigeria, West Africa). The whole story is being told from the shaman’s perspective, whose ability to see across oceans has allowed the Muojeke clan to keep themselves updated on the lives of their descendants. In this account, one follows the African history of the great orator, abolitionist and most photographed American of the 19th century.Item Language Effect on Impressions of Competence and Likability(Northern Kentucky University) Uwolloh, OnyinyeIn our global village world, the United States, despite having the most linguistic diversity on the Earth, uses English in daily dealings as it is the accepted ideal. Although English is not recognized as an official language in the nation, the literature shows that negative stereotypes are attached to individuals with accented English. This study found that even when some languages’ actual words could not be determined, not only did the different languages affect how participants rated a multilingual speaker’s perceived competence and likability, but these ratings also differed based on country of origin of the participants.
