Abstract

Laser sintering is the process where metallic or ceramic powder is deposited on a powder bed and then melted by a laser in thin layers about 1mm thick. There is a growing demand for skilled workers in this field. UC has requested graduates from NKU to enter their master’s program for additive manufacturing. The problem is that a 3D printer for laser sintering is expensive. This can be resolved by retrofitting an existing 3D printer with a laser-based powder sintering option. This system was successfully designed and installed with the exception of the table-top, wiper assembly and half the electrical components.
